5:1 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
5:2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
5:3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.
5:4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
5:5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
5:6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
5:7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won’t torture me!”
5:8 For Jesus had said to him, “Come out of this man, you evil spirit!”
5:9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”
5:10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
5:11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
5:12 The demons begged Jesus, “Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.”
5:13 He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
5:14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
5:15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
5:16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man–and told about the pigs as well.
5:17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
5:18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
5:19 Jesus did not let him, but said, “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
5:20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
5:21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
5:22 Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet
5:23 and pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”
5:24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
5:25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
5:26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
5:27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
5:28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
5:29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
5:30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
5:31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’”
5:32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
5:33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
5:34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
5:35 While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher any more?”
5:36 Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
5:37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
5:38 When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.
5:39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”
5:40 But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
5:41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
5:42 Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.
5:43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
5:1 And they came to the other side of the sea, into the region of the Gerasenes.
5:2 And when He came out of the boat, immediately, from out of the tombs, a man with an unclean spirit met Him,
5:3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one could bind him any longer, not even with a chain,
5:4 Because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him, and the shackles smashed, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
5:5 And continually night and day, among the tombs and in the mountains, he cried out and gashed himself with stones.
5:6 And when he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and worshipped Him,
5:7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, What do I have to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure You by God, do not torment me!
5:8 For He had said to him, Come out of the man, unclean spirit.
5:9 And He questioned him, What is your name? And he said to Him, Legion is my name, because we are many.
5:10 And he entreated Him much not to send them out of the region.
5:11 Now there on the mountainside was a great herd of hogs feeding.
5:12 And they entreated Him, saying, Send us to the hogs, so that we may enter into them.
5:13 And He gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered into the hogs, and the herd, about two thousand, rushed down the steep slope into the sea, and they were drowned in the sea.
5:14 And those who were feeding them fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside. And they came to see what had happened.
5:15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting down, clothed, and sane, the man who had had the legion, and they became frightened.
5:16 And those who had seen it related to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man and concerning the hogs.
5:17 And they began to entreat Him to depart from their borders.
5:18 And as He got into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might stay with Him.
5:19 And He did not allow him, but said to him, Go to your house, to your own people, and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you.
5:20 And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him, and all marveled.
5:21 And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered to Him, and He was beside the sea.
5:22 And one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name, and seeing Him, fell at His feet;
5:23 And he entreated Him much, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay Your hands on her that she may be healed and live.
5:24 And He went with him, and a great crowd followed Him and pressed upon Him.
5:25 And a woman was there, who had a flow of blood for twelve years.
5:26 She had suffered much under many physicians and had spent everything she had and had not benefited at all, but rather became worse.
5:27 When she heard the things concerning Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His garment,
5:28 For she said, If I touch even His garments, I will be healed.
5:29 And immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she was cured of the affliction.
5:30 And immediately Jesus, realizing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, Who touched My garments?
5:31 And His disciples said to Him, You see the crowd pressing upon You and You say, Who touched Me?
5:32 And He looked around to see her who had done this.
5:33 But the woman, frightened and trembling, knew what had happened to her, and she came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
5:34 And He said to her, Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be well from your affliction.
5:35 While He was still speaking, some came from the house of the ruler of the synagogue, saying, Your daughter has died. Why bother the Teacher any longer?
5:36 But Jesus, overhearing the word spoken, said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not be afraid ? only believe.
5:37 And He did not allow anyone to accompany Him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.
5:38 And they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and He saw a commotion and people weeping and wailing greatly.
5:39 And He entered in and said to them, Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child has not died but is sleeping.
5:40 And they laughed scornfully at Him. But He, putting them all out, took the father of the child and the mother and those with Him and went in to where the child was.
5:41 And He took hold of the child’s hand and said to her, Talitha koum! which being interpreted is, Little girl, to you I say, Arise!
5:42 And immediately the little girl rose up and walked about, for she was twelve years old. And immediately, they were amazed with great amazement.
5:43 And He strongly commanded them that no one should know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
