4:1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people.
4:2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
4:3 They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.
4:4 But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.
4:5 The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in Jerusalem.
4:6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and the other men of the high priest’s family.
4:7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!
4:9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed,
4:10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.
4:11 He is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.’
4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
4:13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.
4:14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.
4:15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.
4:16 “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it.
4:17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
4:18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
4:19 But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God.
4:20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
4:21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened.
4:22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
4:23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.
4:24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.
4:25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: “‘Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
4:26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.’
4:27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.
4:28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.
4:29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.
4:30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.
4:32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.
4:33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.
4:34 There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales
4:35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.
4:36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement),
4:37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.
4:1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,
4:2 Being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and announcing in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
4:3 And they laid their hands on them and placed them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening.
4:4 But many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of men came to about five thousand.
4:5 And on the next day their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem,
4:6 As well as Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander and as many as were of high-priestly descent.
4:7 And they stood them in the midst and inquired, By what power or in what name did you do this?
4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders,
4:9 If we today are being examined regarding a good deed done to a sick man, by what means this man has been healed,
4:10 Let it be known to you all and to all the people of Israel that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified and whom God has raised from the dead, in this name this man stands before you in good health.
4:11 This is the stone which was considered as nothing by you, the builders, which has become the head of the corner.
4:12 And there is salvation in no other, for neither is there another name under heaven given among men in which we must be saved.
4:13 And as they beheld the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they were uneducated men and laymen, they marveled and they recognized them, that they had been with Jesus.
4:14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against it.
4:15 But they ordered them to go away outside the Sanhedrin and conferred with one another,
4:16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? For that indeed a notable sign has occurred through them is manifest to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
4:17 But in order that this would not be spread further among the people, let us threaten them that they no longer speak based upon this name to anyone.
4:18 And when they called them, they charged them not to utter anything at all nor teach based upon the name of Jesus.
4:19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you judge;
4:20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
4:21 And when they had further threatened them, they released them, finding no way that they could punish them on account of the people, because they all were glorifying God for what had happened;
4:22 For the man on whom this sign of healing had occurred was more than forty years old.
4:23 And when they had been released, they went to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
4:24 And when they heard this, they lifted up their voice with one accord to God and said, Sovereign Master, You are the One who has made heaven and earth and the sea and all things in them,
4:25 Who, through the Holy Spirit, through the mouth of our father David Your servant, has said, Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples devise vain things?
4:26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against His Christ.
4:27 For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
4:28 To do what Your hand and Your counsel predestined to take place.
4:29 And now, Lord, look upon their threatenings and grant Your slaves to speak Your word with all boldness,
4:30 While stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may take place through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.
4:31 And when they had so besought, the place in which they were gathered was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness.
4:32 And the heart and soul of the multitude of those who had believed was one; and not even one said that any of his possessions was his own, but all things were common to them.
4:33 And with great power the apostles gave testimony of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
4:34 For neither was anyone among them in need; for as many as were owners of lands or of houses sold them and brought the proceeds of the things which were sold
4:35 And placed them at the feet of the apostles; and it was distributed to each, as anyone had need.
4:36 And Joseph, who was surnamed Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated, Son of encouragement), a Levite, a Cyprian by birth,
4:37 Who possessed a field, sold it and brought the sum of money and placed it at the feet of the apostles.
